Each year the Illinois Fatherhood Initiative sponsors a state-wide essay contest.

This year the topic ("Me and My Dad") inspired 57,000 respondents to write about their relationship with their fathers. At principal Larry
Brant's suggestion, Clay City students in Ms. Karen Morris' and Ms. Michelle Phegley's English classes responded to the essay prompt last fall, and Miss Melinda Harvel was among those to write impassioned essays about fatherhood and the profound effect fathers have in their children's lives. For her effort, she was chosen as a finalist. Throughout the state, twelve finalists were chosen at each grade level; they and their fathers are invited to participate in a ceremony at a White Sox Game on May 12. Clay City High School is proud of Melinda and her achievement.
